Recycling and Garbage

Recycling Depot

The Recycling Centre is located beside the Public Works Yard at the intersection of North Maquinna and McKelvie. Access is 8:00am to 3:30pm Monday to Saturday, and the site has bins for recycling plastics, aluminium, tin cans, paper, newspapers, cardboard and plastic milk containers, as well as a bin for household garbage. The Tahsis recycling program is operated on behalf of RecycleBC, which is the non-profit industry funded organization responsible for recycling.
More information can be found on the following websites: https://recyclebc.ca/ or https://www.cswm.ca/

Garbage Pickup

The Village provides weekly curb-side garbage pickup(Wednesdays) and operates a landfill on behalf of the Comox Strathcona Solid Waste program which is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The Recycling Council of British Columbia (RCBC) facilitates the exchange of ideas and knowledge that enable efficient solutions to eliminate waste. Founded in 1974, RCBC is Canada’s longest serving recycling council, but it is about more than just recycling. RCBC works to prevent and reduce the use of resources before they ever need to be recycled. However, when B.C. residents have end-of-life materials, RCBC’s primary role is to provide them with information about the options available in their communities, through the Recycling Hotline, B.C. Recyclepedia and Phone App.

Free Store

An area at the Recycling Depot has been designated for a Free Store. Anyone disposing of items, that could be utilized by someone else, is encouraged to use the free store.

“Better that someone else may find the item useful than the item being buried at the landfill site.”

Landfill

The Tahsis Landfill is a service of the Comox Strathcona Waste Management( a Function of the Comox Valley Regional District). It serves the Village of Tahsis and the surrounding area including Moutcha Bay Resort and Esperanza. The Landfill is operated by the Village of Tahsis under a contracted agreement with CSWM. The landfill accepts a range of materials, but no hazardous materials, including asbestos. More information about the landfill is available on the CSWM website: WWW.CSWM.CA

The Tahsis Landfill Site is open

Wednesdays from 8:00am – 3:00pm

Saturdays from 9:00am – 3:00pm

Community Composting Program

Tahsis has a Joracan tumbler composter located inside the yellow shipping container beside the free store.

Residents can register to participate by contacting reception@villageoftahsis.com or Public Works After Hours Phone (250) 202-9623. You will need to book a walk-through of the shipping container to understand how the composting system works. Once registered, residents are free to bring their food waste and add it to the composter anytime Monday to Saturday from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm. Finished compost is available on a first come, first serve basis. There is also compost tea available to take, which adds valuable nutrients directly to your soil, improving plant health and microbial activity.

Download the Compost Program handout to understand how the Joracan system works, the steps to participate and the do’s and don’t’s of what to add.
