2024 By-Election

Village of Tahsis By-Election 2024

 Tahsis, B.C., March 6, 2024: The Village of Tahsis will be holding a by-election to fill two vacant Councillor positions resulting from the resignation of Councillors Douglas Elliott and Meggan Joseph.  General Voting Day will be Saturday May 18, 2024 from 8 am – 8 pm at the Village of Tahsis Recreation Centre, 285 Alpine View Rd, Tahsis.  Advance Voting will take place on May 8, 2024 from 8 am – 8 pm at the Village of Tahsis Recreation Centre, 285 Alpine View Rd, Tahsis

 

Qualified Candidates interested in putting their name forward for office must submit their required nomination package during Candidate Nomination Period, which begins at 9:00 am on Tuesday, April 2 and concludes at 4:00 pm Friday, April 12, 2024.

 

Those interested in voting in the by-election should ensure they are eligible to vote and are registered. In accordance with the Local Government Act and the Village of Tahsis’ Election and Assent Voting Bylaw No. 622, 2019, the Village will be using the Provincial Voters List as the register of resident electors. There will be no advance elector registration for resident electors however new elector registrations will be accepted on advance and general voting days.

 

If you are a non-resident property elector, advance elector registrations will be accepted at the Village of Tahsis, municipal office at 977 S. Maquinna Drive, Tahsis, B.C., telephone 250-934-6344 office until 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2024. Elector registrations will not be accepted during the period Wednesday, March 27, 2024 until May 21, 2024 but will be accepted on both advance and general voting days.

All legislated notices containing important dates and announcements respecting the by-election will be advertised on the Village of Tahsis website and Facebook page, as well as posted in the public posting places, the Village of Tahsis Post Office and the Recreation Centre, in accordance with the Village of Tahsis Public Notice Bylaw No. 659, 2023.

Voting Opportunities:

General Voting Day: Saturday May 18, 2024 from 8 am to 8 pm

Advance Voting Day: Wednesday May 8, 2024 from 8 am to 8 pm

Location: General and Advance Voting Opportunities will be held at Village of Tahsis Recreation Centre

 

Elector Qualifications

The following qualifications must be met to register as a resident or non-resident property elector.

 

Resident Electors:

  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day; and
  • a Canadian citizen; and
  • a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; and
  • a resident of the Village of Tahsis; and,
  • not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election and not otherwise disqualified by law.

 

Non-Resident Property Electors:

  • not entitled to register as a resident elector; and
  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day; and
  • a Canadian citizen; and
  • a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; and
  • a registered owner of real property in the Village of Tahsis for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration; and
  • the only persons who are registered owners of the real property, either as joint tenants or tenants in common, are individuals who are not holding the property in trust for a corporation or another trust; and
  • not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or otherwise disqualified by law; and
  • if there is more than one registered owner of real property, only one of those individuals may, with the written consent of the majority of the owners, register as a non-resident property elector.

Meetings

Council meetings are typically held the first and third Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm.

Other special and committee meetings occur throughout the year as required or set by the mayor, council or the corporate officer.

Council members may also be appointed to represent council on other local and regional boards and attend various community events throughout the year.

 

Village of Tahsis Corporate Structure

The chief administrative officer reports to the mayor and councillors, and oversees areas of the administration, finance, land use planning and development services, policy and by-law development, building inspection, fire, public works (including building maintenance, roads, water and sewer systems), and parks and recreation.
